Understanding differences

The LSA role for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities and particularly for learners with communication difficulties is an enhanced one. It requires specialist knowledge and trusted relationships. This theme focuses on supporting your LSA’s understanding of some of the challenges to learning that students they are working with will face.

For example, knowing the processing time that an individual learner requires to take on new information, and how this will change according to the task and learning context, can make the difference between success and failure in providing effective learning support.

By spending time focusing on developing an understanding of some of the differences young people with learning difficulties and disabilities can experience, your LSAs will be better placed to:

  • recognise and respond to barriers to learning
  • apply their knowledge to individual learners
  • understand behaviour as a form of communication.

The theme has three topics.
